D'Oh! Also note that if you are poor you can be an usher for a night and
see the show for free. Sign up for usherdom at Fine Arts, Room 305 (Top
Floor, tucked way back at the end of the hall, same side of the building
as the main office).

-n

ps.. Also, alot of actual theatres (including Broadway too) do this, so
it's a great way to see shows for free as well as maybe meet someone who
may give you a job :)

Subject: [Undergrad-l] Upper Division Auditions

Hey folks...
This is from Now Showing Online, it didn't make it to the prinited version
from Friday. Please pass this on as it's really important.

---

           Upper Division Auditions

Contributed by Al on Monday February 14, @ 11:14AM from the
         be-there-or-.-.-. dept.

                         UPPER DIVISION

                              AUDITIONS

         TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 5:00 - 6:00 PM, Room
         115

WHO: ALL students who have taken DRAM
5010 and wish to continue taking
                      acting/movement or voice classes above
the 3000 level MUST AUDITION at this
time. This is your only opportunity to qualify
for upper division acting classes for the fall
2000 semester. There will NOT be any
other audition for these classes. Once you
have passed this audition you will receive
POD (Permission of Department) and be
free to enroll in ANY of the upper division
acting classes, in any order, when they are
being offered while you are here at UGA.
                      The courses are the following:

                      DRAM 4330 Shakespeare

DRAM 5500 Acting 3, Advanced Acting

DRAM 5510 Actor Training I: Physical Actor

DRAM 5530 Actor Training II: Voice

                      DRAM 5560 Acting Period Styles

DRAM 5570 Acting for the Camera

You must have either completed DRAM
5010 (Scene Study) or be currently
completing it to be admitted to this audition.

WHAT: The audition will consist of two
                      contrasting monologues not to exceed
three minutes total. Your audition will be
timed and you will be stopped after 3
minutes so please rehearse your audition
                      with time limits in mind.

HOW: Sign up for an appointment on the
sheet listed on the callboard. Please arrive
15 minutes prior to your appointment to
                      complete paper work.

WHY: This is a change in current policy.
The former practice was to audition for
each class separately and possibly several
times during your career here in the
Department. We now expect this system to
better facilitate the needs of the student
                      and program, sort of a
                      "one-stop-shopping," where one audition
will suffice for entry to ALL upper division
                      acting classes.

                      **STUDENTS CURRENTLY ENROLLED
IN ANY OF THE UPPER DIVISION
                      CLASSES WILL NOT NEED TO
AUDITION AGAIN. THEY ARE FREE TO
                      ENROLL IN ANY UPPER DIVISION
                      CLASS AT THIS POINT.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Upper Division Auditions
In order to address ongoing issues/complaints regarding the requirements for
admittance to upper level performance classes, the Performance Faculty made
the following amendment to these requirements at our last area meeting.

These changes are effective beginning this semester, and should not affect
most of you:

To be admitted to any performance class beyond DRAM 3500 (Foundations) and
DRAM 5010 (Scene Study), you must:

1. Pass the upper division screening auditions scheduled above.

2. Have satisfactorily completed or be enrolled in and doing satisfactory
work in Drama 5010.

3. Have satisfactorily completed or be enrolled in and doing satisfactory
work in one other 3-credit hour core course (Dram 3300, 3290, 3200, 3210),
excluding electives + crews.

Meeting these three requirements enables you to enroll, on the basis of
seniority, in upper division performance courses such as Dram 5530
(Movement) and Dram 5570 (Acting for the Camera) being offered this Spring
of 2005.

THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THESE REQUIREMENTS

Please prepare two contrasting monologues not to exceed a combined total of
4 minutes. Prepare your auditions with the utmost of professionalism. Your
manner, preparation, and focus will be taken into account as well as your
performance.

A sign-up sheet will be posted soon. Please see Professors Contini, Criste
or Paolino with any questions. Good luck and don¹t stress out.

George Contini Nominated for Teaching Award
The Honors and Awards Committee has nominated George Contini for the Sandy Beaver Teaching Award. We invite Faculty members and students to write letters of support for George's nomination, to be included in the dossier. Please address letters to Dr. Saltz.

 Common Room and Library
Those of you on your way to the Main Office may have noticed the new Common Room/Library. This room is for faculty/staff and graduate students only; undergraduates may not use the room unsupervised for any reason.

Who's Who Among Students nominations
The University of Georgia has again been invited to nominate our most deserving students for the 2004-2005 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Each school and college is given a quota of undergraduate candidates which it may put forward for this recognition. The quota given to the Franklin College is 45.
The deadline for the College to submit its candidates to the Department of Student Activities, which coordinates this process on campus, is October 22, 2004. Because it is likely that we will receive more than 45 candidates, the Dean’s Office must receive all nominations no later than 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 20, 2003. We can receive no more than one list per department/school/program (via the department head/director) and if more than one student is nominated, we ask that you submit your list in priority order, beginning with your strongest candidate. If we do receive more than 45 candidates, the Dean and associate deans will review all materials which are submitted and decide the final Franklin College nominees.
The following criteria are suggested for determining candidates for Who’s Who:
1. The student must be currently enrolled as a junior or senior.
2. The student should demonstrate outstanding scholastic ability by maintaining a minimum grade point average
of 3.3.
3. The student should be an active participant in academic and extracurricular organizations and activities (honor societies, university/departmental committees, athletic, media, professional, residence hall, fraternal, and community service organizations).
4. The student should demonstrate leadership (both elected and appointed positions).
5. The student should possess excellent potential for future achievement.
Applications are available in the main office.

2005-2006 Season Selection and Submissions
This year there is a change in the way plays will be considered for inclusion in the season. The Season Selection Committee wants to insure that our production season offers an exciting and diverse mix of pieces. We strongly believe that such excitement is a result of the passion, vision, and justification behind the choice of those plays.
We are asking that you write a proposal (2 page max.) giving us the basic information required to have a working knowledge of the script and most importantly, explaining the reasoning behind why you feel this production should be done at UGA.
These reasons could include, but are not limited to, the following:<br
1) You have an innovative concept or vision for the piece.
2) It’s pedagogically sound, representing a theatrical or period style, interesting use of language, interesting design problems, etc.
3) It provides for some sort of interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments or acknowledges/celebrates/explores a significant event, i.e. elections, war, Women’s History Month.
4) It utilizes media/technology in an innovative or experimental manner (Note: Be advised that BIG media shows like “Christmas Carol” and “Living Newspaper” require considerable advance prep, usually two years, and can only be considered when the resources, digital artists, technicians, and time are available. Note, however, that the most innovative and effective artistic applications of technology can be very simple from a technical standpoint.)
5) You have an idea for a thematic concept for an entire season of plays; i.e. Men vs Women, Sports, Oppression.
6) It appeals to a particular audience that you feel the University Theatre has neglected in past seasons.
7) It coincides with your research.
8) It involves the use of alternative performance venues or collaborations with other theatres.
9) It has the potential to attract regional or national attention.
How to Submit:
1) First, make sure you check the list of the past production seasons and do not suggest any plays on that list.
2) On the first page of your proposal please state the following information in a clear format:
Title
Playwright/Composer/Lyricist
Year Written, Edition/Translation
Short Synopsis of Plot
Period within which the Play is Set (as Written)
Please address any potential staging problems inherent in the script (# of locations, moving scenery, costume or lighting changes, media, projections, explosions, sound FX, music, etc).
3) Also on the first page, indicate the casting requirements:
Total number in Cast
Number of Female Roles
Number of Male Roles
Number of Children
Are any of these roles flexible in gender casting? How many?
Number of Musicians (if applicable)
What type of musicians needed? Are the musicians characters in the play?
Number of Dancers
What style of dance is required?
Number of Chorus/Ensemble Members
4) On the second page please state your rationale for doing this play.
Please be advised that there are many factors that influence both the choice of productions and how they are staffed. Just because you have submitted the idea does not necessarily mean that you will direct, design, or perform in the piece. Whatever the end result, the Season Selection Committee thanks you in advance for your thoughts, passion, and vision.
Season Selection Committee Meetings are open to all to attend. If you wish to present something to the committee you must first clear this with the Committee and arrange an appropriate time for such a presentation.
Please submit your proposal to the Season Selection Committee no later than Wednesday November 17, 2004. You may leave proposals in the main office in the basket marked Season Selection Proposals.
Any questions please contact Season Selection Committee Chair, Professor Contini (gcontini@uga.edu) or any of the other members of the Season Selection Committee; Professors Paolino, Criste, Giles, Hantula or student representatives Katherine Carey and Joshua Waterstone.
The Committee thanks you in advance for your time and consideration in this matter and we look forward to reading your proposals.

Honors and Awards Committee invites nominations
Honors and Awards is accepting nominations for the Josiah Meigs and Sandy Beaver Teaching Professorship. Applicants for the 3-year Beaver Professorship must be tenured faculty with proven accomplishments in teaching (including new course development) and who plan to serve as "teaching advocates in the department and College." Please contact Richard Neupert or any member of the committee by Sept. 29th.

Brigitta Hangartner, a lifelong film lover who moved to Athens 3 years
ago, purchased the old Snow Tire Co. building downtown on 234 W.
Hancock Street. There she'll be building a much-needed art house film
theatre called Cin=E9, slated to open in the fall of 2005.

Here's the article from last week's Flagpole if you'd like to know more:
http://fairmountfair.com/flagpole/weekly/articles.php?fp=3D4682

I'm helping to compile addresses for the Cin=E9 listserv - if you'd like
to stay updated on the progress of Cin=E9 and the events they're
planning before the official opening (many in collaboration with
Athens Film Foundation and Classic Film Festival), send me your email
address!

Either respond to this message with your address or email me at
christa.tinsley@gmail.com. And forward this to anyone else who you
think might like to be added. Thanks!
